Why Choose TV Size Calculator

The TV Size and Viewing Distance Calculator computes exact screen dimensions from the diagonal measurement and aspect ratio, determines the optimal seating distance for both 4K and 1080p content, and calculates pixels per degree to help you understand how sharp the image will appear at your seating position. It supports standard 16:9, ultrawide 21:9, and classic 4:3 aspect ratios.

  • ✓Precise screen width, height, and area from diagonal measurement
  • ✓Optimal viewing distance ranges for 4K and 1080p resolutions
  • ✓Pixels per degree calculation to assess perceived sharpness
  • ✓Distance assessment telling you if your seating is optimal

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the diagonal screen size of your TV in inches.
  2. 2Select the aspect ratio of your display (most modern TVs are 16:9).
  3. 3Enter your typical viewing distance from the screen in feet.
  4. 4Review the calculated screen dimensions and area.
  5. 5Check whether your current seating distance falls within the optimal range for 4K or 1080p.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I measure my TV size?

TV size is always measured diagonally from one corner of the screen to the opposite corner, not including the bezel or frame. A "55-inch TV" means the diagonal of the visible screen area is 55 inches.

What is pixels per degree and why does it matter?

Pixels per degree (PPD) measures how many pixels fit within one degree of your visual field. Higher PPD means a sharper image. Around 60 PPD is considered "retina" quality where individual pixels become indistinguishable. At typical living room distances, 4K TVs achieve much higher PPD than 1080p.

Why should I sit closer to a 4K TV than a 1080p TV?

A 4K TV has four times as many pixels as a 1080p TV of the same size. To appreciate the extra detail, you need to sit close enough for those pixels to fill more of your visual field. Sitting too far away from a 4K TV means you will not see the benefit of the higher resolution.

What aspect ratio should I choose?

Most modern TVs and streaming content use 16:9 (widescreen). The 21:9 ultrawide format is used in some premium displays and for cinematic content. The 4:3 ratio was standard for older CRT televisions and some computer monitors.

Is a bigger TV always better?

Not necessarily. The ideal TV size depends on your viewing distance. A general guideline is that the TV diagonal should be about 40-60% of your viewing distance in inches for 4K content. Too large and you will need to move your head to see the edges; too small and you will not appreciate the resolution.
