Food — Frequently Asked Questions
How do I scale a recipe for a different number of servings?
Multiply each ingredient quantity by the scaling factor (desired servings ÷ original servings). For example, a recipe for 4 people scaled to 10 has a factor of 2.5. However, some ingredients don't scale linearly — spices, salt, and leavening agents often need less than proportional increases. Our recipe scaling calculator handles these adjustments automatically.
What is the ideal coffee-to-water ratio?
The Specialty Coffee Association recommends 55 g of coffee per liter of water (1:18 ratio) as a starting point. For stronger brew: 1:15 to 1:16. For lighter, tea-like coffee: 1:18 to 1:20. Espresso uses much higher concentration: 1:2 to 1:3. Our coffee ratio calculator lets you dial in the exact ratio for your preferred brewing method and serving size.
How do I convert a cake recipe from a 9-inch to an 8-inch pan?
Calculate the area ratio: a 9-inch round pan has area π(4.5)² ≈ 63.6 sq in, while an 8-inch has π(4)² ≈ 50.3 sq in. The scaling factor is 50.3/63.6 ≈ 0.79, so multiply all ingredients by 0.79. Also reduce baking time by about 10–15% and check for doneness earlier. Our cake pan converter automates these calculations for any pan shape.
How do I convert between US cups and metric grams for baking?
The conversion depends on ingredient density. Common baking conversions: 1 cup all-purpose flour = 125g, 1 cup granulated sugar = 200g, 1 cup butter = 227g, 1 cup brown sugar (packed) = 220g. For accuracy in baking, weighing ingredients in grams is always preferred over volume measurements. Our cooking converter includes ingredient-specific density factors.
How do I calculate cooking time for a larger roast or turkey?
A general rule is 15–20 minutes per pound (33–44 min/kg) at 325°F/165°C for poultry, and 15 min/lb at 350°F for beef roasts. However, the most reliable method is using internal temperature: poultry at 165°F/74°C, medium-rare beef at 135°F/57°C. Always rest meat for 10–15 minutes after cooking, as internal temperature continues to rise 5–10°F.
